Very Rough Cut......

There is a light that never goes out cover - music video ( rough cut) from Jack Stokoe on Vimeo.

This is my first very rough cut.

There still are issues in which I need to adress but I will be evaluating these in the next vlog.

overall I'm pleased with this first draft but there still is allot more work to be done.

  1. This is actually coming along quite nicely, Jack. I think the opening works a little better. There is still plenty of work which needs to be done tightening up the editing (particularly with regard to where particular edits happen at particular beats (for example, the opening (which seems to be less tight than it was) and when your main character is walking down the back alley). You should aim to try and match the edits to the beginning of the lines, if you can. You might want to aim for some faster edits when you have the drumbeats before the chorus. There are some slightly odd narrative choices in terms of "beats" of action. I would suggest the following structure:

    Opening in the room
    Penshaw hill
Some footage of driving (at about 39s, before you get to the street near the Stadium of Light)
More footage of driving (lose the shot of the beach at 01:11 - it doesn't fit)
Footage at the beach (I would be tempted to flip the shot at 1:53 and there is an odd edit at 2:00 between two ELSs; you need something in between
    Footage of driving
I think you get to the older version too soon. It would have more dramatic impact if we met him at the end of the second chorus, on the "There is a light that never goes out" bit. I think you need more of the young guy, possibly even a new episode between the fair and the beach (would be nice if there was more footage of the fair). Durham cathedral, perhaps? That said, the ending itself works quite well.

  2. As an additional point, I think it's well worth your while re-watching the videos for Suedehead and Every Day Is Like Sunday, since I think you might get some ideas from them as well, in terms of editing, shots and structure

  3. Another thing that you should comment on is the choice of camera movement and shot composition. I notice that in the videos for these songs, and particularly the original TIALTNGO (with the bikes) the camera is very dynamic and intrusive. You should certainly mention this. Also that the videos themselves have very little to do with the lyrics (apart from perhaps EDILS), particularly - they seem to be aimed specifically at fans either of the singer/ band (as you might expect) or to promote one of Morrissey;s personal agendas (cult of James Dean, cult of Morrissey, Oscar Wilde etc.)
