second "rough cut"

D:MUsic VIdeosecond cutt from Jack Stokoe on Vimeo.
I'm very happy with this cut and since the last video I have made many changes. The mian change being the emphisis on the editing. I have tried to cut the music to the beat thus leving a smooth change from one scene to another. This is seen at the scene at penshaw monument where I have cut five estabishing shots of the monument to fit together with the fast beat of the drum. This is effective and fits well with the video. Another thing I've added is the archive footage of sunderland winning the Fa cup final in 1972. This footage really fits in well with the contrast of the new footage and the old gives a graeter feel of reminising ( which is one of the main focuses of the video) .

roughhhh from Jack Stokoe on Vimeo.

In this video I give a directors commentary over the video so far.

I address these subject areas:

-the need to re-shoot the first scene due to no picture being inside the sleeve of the record

-the need to improve the editing so the video cuts with the beat

- using the reverse edit on premier pro to keep the action match.

- whether I should use archive footage in my Peirce ( due to my approval of the 1073 fa cup final footage)

- how I've cut the footage by the glass door due to the cameraman's refection ( me)

- the use of slow motion at the scene on the beach and the effectiveness of it to the wider story

-  how the ending is an anti climax and how it needs to be re-shot

Very Rough Cut......

There is a light that never goes out cover - music video ( rough cut) from Jack Stokoe on Vimeo.

This is my first very rough cut.

There still are issues in which I need to adress but I will be evaluating these in the next vlog.

overall I'm pleased with this first draft but there still is allot more work to be done.

The story so far...

Storyboard

This is the storyboard I have created for The Suedes first music video "there is a light that never goes out"

From what I learnt with my last project, I believe that this will only be a guide to help me know the shots I need to film. Personally I prefer to use the storyboard for inspiration. I believe that improvisation is a good tool to use, its hard to picture the surroundings in your head when drawing a storyboard and once I get to the destination I know I'll change the angle or shot yet the storyboard allows me to keep focused on what I need to film.

Overview of video

My music video will be for the suede's final track on the album ( there is a light that never goes out)

The music video will be heavyly inspired by morrissey's suedehead video and Ian Browns's Illegal attacks video.

The video will start pitch black and a light will come on showing a loft (no music) and James will come into the shot taking an old box of records. There will be a cut to a panning shot showing parts of his room to emphasis to the audience the character is almost stuck in the past with an obsession to retro things (eg smiths posters).
Then we'll see him opening a gate fold record to reveal an old photo of lighthouse to which he turns it over to reveal a message which reads "find the light that never goes out" ( then the song starts ).

Then there will be a long shot of him leaving his house cutting to shots of north eastern scenes. (the emphasis throughout the video being the more gritty parts of the north).

then scenes will show him walking past numerous gritty streets until he reaches a point in which there will be a close up on him taking an old brownie camera out of his pocket. Then he will take a photo of a north eastern landmark. ( like in the suedehead video ) you will see James take the photo and then there will be a cut to the still image he has taken.

This will continue with various other spots including panning shots and , the very common sot of  out of the car window showing North eastern, gritty scenery.

The next scene will pan in from a river then showing him walking along and asking an extra where the place (by the use of hand gestures) in the photo is to which they'll not know.

Then the next scene will be shot at penshaw monument, there will be a Shot of him walking towards, cut with different shots of the monument, then an over the shoulder shot showing the landscape.

then there will be a fade to him walking along the Pier and then a shot of him looking out to sea.

The last scene will be a tracking shot of the front of him looking up to which the lighthouse is revealed by an over the shoulder shot.

then the shot will fade out back to the shot of the record (at the start) revealing an aged character. Thus suggesting he was reminiscing about the journey he made

posters

This poster is typical of what is normally seen in a magazine advert. The album art is re shaped to fit the space (album art below) plus the addition of reviewers comments. The colour scheme of the comments is the red white and blue seen on the front cover of the album. The record label is in white along with information about the release at the bottom. Yet the only thing that isn't in the colour scheme of the record is the HMV logo in which stands out due to its purple text and curved font. The font seen on the reviewers comments is the same bold font seen on the record cover.

This magazine advert advertises Lesbian's first album. The prominent photo is the album artwork with the band's logo. The only part which has been added to create it into a magazine poster is the text below their logo. The line"The Debut Album" differs from the logo font but bares the same black and white colour scheme. The same text is carried on with the writing below which shows reviewers comments. The larger text at the bottom is information on the singles of the album.

This is simple yet effective due to the hype surrounding the band at their start.

This is similar to most other magazine adverts in showing the album artwork. the only real difference from the album sleeve is the addition of reviewers comments and the enlarged logo of the band. The black and white colour scheme is kept throughout the poster. The date of release is seen in bold text on this poster which is common in magazine posters

Suedehead

Morrissey - Suedehead

This is a video I have seen which I will have allot of inspiration for my final piece.  The use of the narrative is common amongst indie rock music videos and this is a prime example. The video donsent tell a deep and meaning full story but has simple narrative. One device which is used is the cut between morrissey taking the photo and then to the black and white photo that was taken. This is the only time Ive seen it on a music video but it fits in well and I think I'll use it in mine. The music video also uses many shots of the environment and it cuts in time with the music. This is something I'm definitely using in my video due to the fact my band are a north east based there will be many shots of the northern scenery.

There are also many panning shots in the video that combine two shots toter. for example there is a shot of the scenery which pans into morrissey in a cafe. This may be something I can try and replicate in my video.

Yet I may not be replicating the shot of morrissey in a field of cows playing bongo drums.

pitch

Jack's Pitch from Chris Earl on Vimeo.

A first draft of my album artwork and branding of my piece. one of my main focus points was the use of colour. I've used a Burgundy and sky blue in the tint of the photo and on the text to give the retro feel seen in the inspirations below from Jake Bugg, the smiths Morrissey and beady eye.

The logo is mainly inspired from Jake bugg' logo by the use of bold text with an underline on the second word yet it isn't a clear copy but bares a small resemblance.

The picture in the background was inspired by the smiths original records in which they used old photos on their lp covers. The image itself is from 1996 of sunderland fans. I used a Burgundy tint to give a vintage/retro finish alongside the sky blue title.

The back of the CD is intended to be simple yet cary the colour scheme of the front. I have used inspiration from the smiths first album and miles Kane's first album back's. The simple design fits well with the vibrant front cover.

below is the rights of this image which gives me the ability to use it if I quote the photographer.

Band logo

The latest arctic monkeys band logo bares simple black and white font that has been edited so the lines are slightly waved and the font gets gradually larger.

From looking at British indie rock bands in which my band "the suedes" will be following in the footsteps on, I have made the conclusion that mine will have similarities.  Predominantly the logo is black (or white depending on the album cover colour) and bares the name of the band in a font in which emphasises their image. My particular favourite is the stone roses lemon. This has given me inspiration for a fruit orientated logo.

I have came to the conclusion that most artists dont self title their debut album but it isnt unusual for them to.

The album cover bares a close up image of Jake with a backdrop of terraced housing. The backdrop may be a mechanism in which to reach the target market showing that Jake is from this background and is writing music about working class Britain. The image on the back emphasises this by having a mid-long shot of Jake in the working class street. The lettering on the front is simple but effective in clearly showing the artists name and is used as a brand on all of his work ( also on the back of the cd) The CD itself totally contrasts with the cover which is interesting. I'm not quite sure why because usually the image on the cd is relevant to the front cover.

The sepia effect of the cover gives the vintage look in which keeps with the sound of Jake Bugg who has been described as a 21st century Johnny Cash.

Album artwork for Ian Brown Keep what youve got

This is the artwork from Ian Brown's Solarised, the album in which the single "keep what yer got" is from. The distinguishing feature is the low resalution picture with lens flare on Ian Browns's left. The picture isnt a still from the video but its shot in the same style. The picture shows him behind a Japanese arch. the singer has strong connections with Japaese culture which may explain this imageary on his lp cover. The text that is used is the same font yet the album title is larger than the artist's name.

The last image on the set is the single cover which holds his logo. The logo of the speach bubble with his name within it. The logo is his brand and is on most of Ian Brown's musical products. Yet the image on the single bares no relevance to the music video.

Seen It All

My first attempt at creating a music video. I am rather proud of the use of cuts and action matches. The film runs smoothly and looks like a real music video. I did use only windows movie maker which limited the amount of editing I could do on the clip but unfortunately I don't have adobe on my home computer. I had filmed allot of other footage of myself playing guitar and miming the words but the quality of the footage wasn't good I believe we were only filming in 720p for these scenes which made them not fit with the other scenes. I had fully put it together but it looked rough and the lip sync wasn't to a good enough standard. If I were to use lip syncing in my final piece I would make sure the auto focus was on my face because on the footage I took the auto focus wasn't steady and kept on jerking.  Yet I've still impressed myself with this piece; it's simple nature contrasts with the song yet fits in the same way.

Something I found in my preliminary research into British indie rock music videos was allot of slow motion, I've played with this on movie maker and I think it gives a good effect. Yet with windows movie maker's limited capabilities I was unable to fade the slow motion back into full speed it just allowed me to cut. I've researched on the internet and found that the adobe software has this capability. I also used a fade function which looks good. Yet again was limited in the amount you could edit the fade.

Keep what youve got analysis

An Inspiration - Anton Corbijn

 Anton Corbijn

Starting out as a Dutch photographer he diverted to creating music videos in 1983 when he made his first for Palais Schaumburg with their single hockey ( a small indie rock dutch band ). The success of the band in Germany could be considered to be because of their music video. The style of music video was as a breakthrough due to previously inde music videos would contain stock videos and sometimes the band playing live. This lead to Anton gaining offers from many other well established music acts such as echo and the bunnymen, Depeche Mode, U2 , Metallica , The red hot chili peppers, Nirvana and most recently coldplay's Viva la Vida.

But He's most well known for his work with Joy division on Atmosphere. This was the video in which was released after the front man, Ian Curtis's, passing. The music video became a cult classic due to its thought provoking monks walking around the Beach. This spooky video became a classic and was believed to represent the emptiness left by Ian's death by the black and white spooky monks.

Inspiral Carpets - This Is How It Feels

Inspiral Carpets - This Is How It Feels by InspiralCarpets-Official
I saw this music video the other day from the inspiral carpets and I thought the style was different yet effective.

The first scene of the changing landscape with a box with changing pictures on is a style I haven't seen in a music video before , it bares no significance to the song but i believe its a style significant to the inspiral carpets. This long shot establishes the desolate scene and environment.

The next scene shows the assumed lead singer lip syncing the words. This is an area in which I'm unsure about for my music video weather to lip sync or not its present in allot of music videos but I'll have to do more research into my genre of music to see if its a prominent font and if so I'll have to decide to comply or go against the norm.

One of my favourite parts of this music video is when the instuments are thrown in the sea yet it's been played backwards in slow motion. This is a styleised part of the music video but i believe I may be able to incorpirated into my video after effects

Breif history of the modern music video

The starting point of this project is to look at where the modern music video started from annd how it
has come to being what it is today.

Its argued that the music video started life as broadway musicals and then musical films but the first official music video was The Beatles Hard days Night. This was due to their hightened popularity in the 1960s their managers and music label were trying everything to make as much money from the band as possible, thus creating the first music video ( Which was more of a mockumentary of their lives).

In 1973 one of the first official videos created for promoting records was done by David Bowie  with a series of promotional films directed by pop photographer Mick Rock who directed and edited four clips to promote four  of David Bowie singles—"John, I'm Only Dancing","The Jean Genie". The clip for "John, I'm Only Dancing" was made with a budget of just Rainbow Theatre concert on 19 August 1972. It shows Bowie and band miming to the record intercut with footage of Bowie's dancers The Astronettes dancing on stage. The clip was turned down by the BBC, who reportedly found the homosexual overtones of the film distasteful, although Top of the Pops replaced it with footage of bikers and a dancer.

Top of the pops stared in the early 70s which was where music acts would preform to a live audience promoting their music. This was on BBC Tv weekly and was one of the first television channels to show muic videos. This was a breakthrough because it enabled music acts to promote their music without playing live on many shows around the world.

Then the first ever 24 hour music channel aired across america leading to the song "Video Killed The Radio Star" by Woolley & the Camera Club. This channel was named MTV

Fist post on A2

We have been given the choice of many tasks to complete for A2 Media, In which I chose to crate a music video, CD cover and digipack and an advertisement for a magazine.

I chose this music orientated package due to my heightened interest in music and the art of LP covers . some of my favourite LP covers are :

The Stone Roses ( cover by guitarist John squire with inspiration from Jackson Pollock)

David Bowie Low ( cover by Bowie with inspiration form Andy Warhol)

Joy Division Unknown Pleasures ( Cover by Peter Saville)

The Queen is Dead ( Cover by Morrissey )
